After a 2 hour flight north from Santiago, you will arrive at the driest place on Earth. With the vast expanses of Mars-like terrain, and clear skies, it’s a haven for astronomers, adventurers, and seekers of solitude. Geysers hiss at dawn, flamingos wade in mineral-rich lagoons, and ancient petroglyphs whisper stories of the desert’s deep past. Despite its harshness, the Atacama is a place of unexpected beauty and profound stillness, where boundless wildlife persists against all odds.

Day 9: Rainbow Valley

Rainbow Valley is a striking geological wonder known for its vivid palette of mineral-rich rock formations. The valley’s layered hills display an extraordinary spectrum of colors—reds, purples, greens, yellows, and whites—created by centuries of volcanic activity and mineral oxidation. Surrounded by otherworldly desert landscapes and set against a backdrop of clear blue skies, Rainbow Valley feels surreal, offering a stunning visual contrast to the stark, arid terrain that defines the region. It’s a peaceful, less-visited site that invites exploration, photography, and reflection. You might just feel like you have the place all to yourselves.

Day 10: Valle de la Luna

This might be the closest you’ll get to walking on the moon! Jagged rock formations, vast sand dunes, and salt-covered plains have been sculpted by wind and time. Within the Los Flamencos National Reserve, with its eerie silence and stark, alien beauty, the Valley of the Moon offers a profound sense of solitude and awe, making it one of the most iconic and unforgettable natural sites in the region.

The Tatio Geysers, perched at over 14,108 feet above sea level in the Chilean Andes, are one of the highest geyser fields in the world and a mesmerizing sight when plumes of steam rise dramatically from the ground. The air is crisp, the geothermal landscape surreal, and the bubbling geysers, fumaroles, and hot springs create a truly otherworldly experience. Nearby, a hike through the high-altitude wetlands offers a stunning contrast, with unexpected bursts of life—flamingos, vicuñas, and a variety of bird species—thriving among emerald grasses and mineral-rich streams. This unique combination of geothermal activity and fragile highland ecosystem showcases the astonishing diversity and resilience of life in the Atacama’s extreme environment.
